Job Description

We are seeking a Terminal Manager in Chicago for a large international Freight Forwarder. Must have previous experience in the Freight Forwarding Industry. 

Title:                Terminal Manager

Reports to:      Director of Operations

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

  • Develop and manage company expectations of terminal resources to exceed financial, operational and leadership agendas
  • Drive Standard Forwarding corporate initiatives to make certain they are consistently applied
  • Ensure business remains focused on customer requirements and operational performance, and the talent to support ongoing effort is in place via succession planning
  • Communicates needs of terminal operation to Director of Operations to ensure service directives of Standard Forwarding customers are met
  • Drive an operational performance agenda with a focus on Safety, LR, Quality and operational excellence
  • Direct and manage daily terminal operations to meet Key Performance Indicator goals
  • Ensure that the terminal is properly staffed through labor planning strategies
  • Review and Analyze reports, records and directives and confers with Managers and Supervisors to obtain data required for planning and accountability activities, such as status of directives in progress, trending of data that illustrates problems encountered in the operation
  • Drive continual improvement by evaluating current terminal procedures and practices for accomplishing company directives and develop and implement improved procedures and practices
  • Set a standard for performance.  Establish trust, champion change, build talent by setting priorities, and drive results
  • Interface with other functions, Sales, Customer Service, Finance, Human Resources, to ensure the terminal in meeting customer service requirements, grow the terminal business and meet productivity, LR cost targets that affect terminal profitability
  • Evaluate alternatives and utilize discretion to make independent decisions regarding terminal operation
  • Communicate to terminal management team on a daily basis with all Key Performance Indicators-addresses and analyzed, trending of terminal performance metrics, equipment control and needs, personnel staffing and concerns and safety awareness
  • Monitors and analyzes terminal costs and prepares terminal budget goals
  • Achieve agreed budget, revenue, and LR goals
  • Ability to coach, mentor and train leaders to improve work performance and self esteem
  • Ability to recognize, reward and reinforce good performance
  • Managing the terminal vendor contracts and agreements, and ensure they are modelled correctly and executable
  • Responsible for proper communication with all departments of Standard Forwarding to ensure customers needs are met
  • Perform duties in accordance with the Standard Forwarding Standards of Business Conduct
  • Required to observe and comply with all federal, state, and local laws and/or Standard Forwarding including company policy concerning safety, claims prevention, and hours of service


  • Must have 10+ years of experience as an Operations Manager
  • Must have experience working for a large Freight Forwarder
  • Must have experience leading a large team
